Russian Family Visa: A Year of Free Movement for the Spouse of a Russian Citizen

The foreign spouse of a Russian citizen does not have to chain thirty-day tourist visas or apply for a residence permit just to live with their family. A one-year multi-entry private visa exists for close relatives of Russian citizens: it caps no length of stay, it can be extended for another year without leaving the country, and it rests on a written application by the Russian relative rather than on an official invitation. It is the most useful and least known document of the whole path.

What the family visa changes

A newly married Russian-Western couple hits the same wall fast: she is a Russian citizen, he is not, and the standard tourist visa runs thirty days. The e-visa does no better. The instinct is then to aim straight at a residence permit, a procedure with four months of processing, a medical examination, a criminal record certificate and, depending on the basis chosen, language exams.

There is a middle step most guides skip: the multi-entry private visa issued to close relatives of Russian citizens, valid for up to one year.

Three features set it apart from an ordinary visa:

  • Unlimited entries and exits for its whole validity.
  • No cap on the length of stay. The 90-days-in-180 rule that constrains ordinary multi-entry visas does not apply to this category. The holder can stay twelve months straight if they wish.
  • Extendable inside Russia, with no need to leave the country and file again at a consulate.

In practice it lets someone live with their spouse while continuing to work or run a business in their home country, travelling as needed. For many couples it answers the first two or three years, while the plan settles.

this visa is neither a residence permit nor a work permit. It grants the right to enter, leave and stay, with no duration cap. Working legally in Russia requires a different status.

Who counts as a close relative

The list is fixed and does not extend by analogy. Close relatives of a Russian citizen, under the consular rules, are:

  • the spouse;
  • parents, including adoptive parents;
  • children, including adopted children;
  • children's spouses;
  • brothers and sisters, full or half;
  • grandparents;
  • grandchildren.

Each link must be proved by a civil status document: marriage certificate for a spouse, birth certificate for parentage. Documents drawn up abroad go through apostille and translation into Russian.

One point that matters for mixed couples: the marriage may have been celebrated abroad or in Russia. What counts is that the certificate stands up, meaning apostilled and translated if foreign. A marriage registered at a ZAGS avoids that step.

Getting the visa from abroad

What is distinctive here is that the procedure does not run through a Ministry of Internal Affairs invitation. Where a business or tourist visa requires an invitation issued by an accredited body, here the Russian relative triggers the application themselves.

The mechanism has four steps:

  1. The written application by the Russian relative. The Russian citizen draws up an application for their foreign close relative to enter, stating both parties' details, the purpose and dates of the visit, and the planned place of stay. In principle this is signed in person before the consular officer. Where the Russian relative cannot travel to the consulate, the rules accept the original of their application certified by a Russian notary. That is the route couples take when the wife lives in Russia: a visit to the notary, then the original is sent.
  2. Assembling the foreign applicant's file: passport valid at least six months beyond the requested visa with two blank pages, application form completed on the consular portal and printed, photograph, medical insurance covering Russia, proof of the family relationship.
  3. Filing at the Russian consulate in the applicant's country of residence, by appointment.
  4. Issue. Official consular processing times are five working days for a single or double-entry visa and ten working days for the multi-entry visa. Firms handling these files report five to seven working days of review in practice once a complete file is lodged, plus one to three working days to prepare the documents beforehand.

For nationals of certain countries, the multi-entry family visa can run up to five years. That list moves with bilateral agreements and should be checked with the consulate at the time of application rather than on any online guide.

What it really costs in 2026

Two sets of charges coexist and should not be confused.

What is paid at the consulate, abroad: the consular fee, which varies by country, nationality, whether a facilitation agreement applies, and whether processing is expedited.

What is paid in Russia, to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and which rose sharply on July 27, 2026:

ItemBeforeSince 27/07/2026
Multi-entry visa1,920 ₽6,000 ₽
Entry or exit visa1,200 ₽2,000 ₽
Entry invitation960 ₽8,000 ₽

The increase is recent, and most English-language pages still show the old figures. It bears directly on extending the family visa in country, covered below.

Add the ancillary costs: notarised translation of the passport, 1,500 to 2,000 ₽, apostille and translation of foreign civil status documents, and medical insurance. Full support by a Moscow firm is advertised from 30,000 ₽ for the initial visa and from 35,000 ₽ for the extension, indicative figures taken from 2026 commercial offers.

Extending without leaving Russia

This is what changed in early 2025 and remains widely unknown: the private family visa can be extended for a further year from inside Russia, with no exit and no fresh consular filing.

Two conditions: holding a valid family visa, and having a close relative who is a Russian citizen.

How it runs:

  • The file is lodged with the territorial migration office of the Ministry of Internal Affairs at the place of registration. In Moscow, booking goes through Gosuslugi; elsewhere, check locally.
  • The application is filed 20 to 25 working days before the current visa expires. Anticipating is a requirement here, not a precaution.
  • The file includes the application form, the passport, the migration card, documents proving the family link, the Russian relative's invitation statement and proof of payment of the state fee.
  • Both the foreign national and the inviting Russian relative must attend the filing, and the applicant must attend again to collect.
  • Allow roughly seven working days to prepare and file, then some twenty working days of processing.

The new visa is stamped in the passport for one year from the extension. One last reflex, often forgotten: extend the migration registration at the place of stay too, which does not follow automatically.

the extension is prepared 20 to 25 working days before expiry, requires both people to attend the filing, and now costs 6,000 ₽ in state fees against 1,920 ₽ before July 27, 2026.

Obligations from the day you arrive

A long visa waives none of the duties that fall on temporarily staying foreigners, and two of them have tightened recently.

Migration registration. It is done at the place of stay within days of arrival. In a hotel the establishment handles it. In a private home, the receiving party, here the Russian spouse, has to declare it. That same registration will later determine where the extension is filed.

The medical examination. Since Federal Law No. 162-FZ of June 10, 2026, any foreigner staying more than thirty days must undergo the mandatory medical examination within thirty days of entry. The period was ninety days before. Refusing or dodging it carries heavy penalties. RVP and VNZh holders are exempt, but a family visa holder is not.

This catches out couples who thought they were set for a year: the visa runs twelve months, the medical duty falls in the first.

The right to work. The family visa does not grant it. Paid employment in Russia requires another status: work permit, RVP or VNZh. Nothing prevents continuing to work for a foreign employer or foreign clients, subject to your own country's tax rules and to Russian tax residence beyond 183 days of presence.

Family visa or residence permit: which to aim for

The two are not rivals; they follow one another. The table below compares what each actually delivers.

The sequence that works best for a mixed couple is straightforward. The family visa covers the period when the marriage is too recent to open the RVP, since that route requires three years of marriage, unless the couple has a child of Russian citizenship, in which case the duration condition falls away. The comparison of settlement routes sets out what follows.

Once the RVP is granted, a new duty begins: the annual residence notification, with proof of income.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Ministry of Internal Affairs invitation needed? No. The Russian relative's written application is enough, signed before the consular officer or certified by a Russian notary.

Does the 90-in-180 rule apply? Not to the multi-entry family visa issued to close relatives of a Russian citizen. It does apply to ordinary multi-entry visas.

Does my Russian wife have to travel to the consulate abroad? Not necessarily. If she lives in Russia, she has her application certified by a Russian notary and sends the original.

Can I work on this visa? Not in Russia. Nothing stops you continuing an activity for a foreign employer or foreign clients.

Can I apply for an RVP while on this visa? Yes, as soon as you meet a legal basis: three years of marriage, or a child of Russian citizenship in common.

How many times can it be extended? Each extension runs one year. The rules set no cap on the number of extensions, but each one requires meeting the conditions again and filing well ahead.

In short

For the foreign spouse of a Russian citizen, the one-year multi-entry private visa is the fastest and lightest answer: ten working days of processing, no administrative invitation to obtain, no cap on the length of stay, and an extension available without leaving the country.

It does not replace a residence permit; it stands in for one until the permit's conditions are met. The two things not to miss are the medical examination within thirty days of entry, and filing the extension twenty-five working days before expiry.
