Russia Visa: Complete Application Guide for 2026

Applying for a Russian visa in 2026 is no longer the procedure of pre-2022. Direct Europe-Russia flights are suspended, the unified e-visa now covers a 30-day stay for 52 USD, the standard visa is reserved for double entries, and biometrics have been mandatory at the border since late 2024. This pillar guide reviews the eight visa categories in force, the step-by-step procedure, real costs (170-330 EUR consular vs 52 USD online), VFS Global centres in Europe and the mistakes that lead to refusal. Designed for travellers and expatriates who want to understand the mechanics before filing an application.

Russia Visa 2026: Overview and Choosing the Right Category

Before launching any procedure, ask yourself the first question — the one that determines everything else: how long will you stay, how many entries into Russian territory are planned, and is your nationality on the e-visa list? The answer immediately points to one of the eight visa categories in force in 2026, each meeting a specific use case.

Russia distinguishes the visa (entry and short-term stay authorisation, limited validity, tied to a travel purpose) from the residence permit (RVP and then VNJ — long-term residence authorisations, covered in our living in Russia guide). This guide covers exclusively the first step: getting a visa to enter Russia in 2026.

The 2022-2026 context has profoundly changed the equation. Direct Aeroflot Paris-Moscow flights have been suspended since 27 February 2022: any trip now requires a transit through Istanbul, Belgrade, Yerevan, Doha or Dubai. The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Quai d'Orsay) officially advises against travel to Russia for security reasons since 2022, without preventing visa issuance by Russian authorities — the consular procedure remains fully operational. Most other Western foreign ministries (UK FCDO, US State Department) maintain similar advisories.

. Three questions are enough to choose the right category. 1. Stay ≤ 30 days, single entry, eligible nationality (France, UK partial, EU, Japan, India, Turkey, etc.)? Unified e-visa, 52 USD, 100% online application. 2. Double entry, stay > 30 days or nationality outside the e-visa list? Standard tourist visa at the consulate, 100-180 EUR (or 160 USD for US citizens). 3. Work, study, family reunification? Long-stay visa (categories U, W, P) with official invitation. The majority of Western travellers in 2026 fall into category 1 or 2.

This guide reviews the eight categories, details the procedure for the standard tourist visa and the e-visa, quantifies the real total cost in 2026, lists the documents and the VFS Global centres in Europe, and ends with the mistakes that cause refusals.

The 8 Russia Visa Categories in 2026

The Russian system distinguishes eight main categories, each coded by a letter. Each category corresponds to a specific travel purpose and stay duration. Summary table:

Tourist Visa (T)

The tourist visa remains the category most used by European travellers. It allows a maximum stay of 30 consecutive days and requires an invitation in the form of a tourist voucher issued by an accredited hotel or a travel agency registered with the Russian Ministry of Tourism. Voucher cost: 15-30 EUR through online platforms (iVisa, Russia Support, VisaHQ). Single-entry and double-entry visas are priced identically at the consulate — there is no reason to forgo the double entry if your itinerary allows it.

Unified E-Visa — the Silent Revolution of 2023

The unified electronic visa, launched in 2017 then extended to the entire territory in 2021, was massively expanded in August 2023 and reinforced in August 2025. It is today the simplest solution for an EU, UK, Turkish, Indian, or other eligible passport holder planning a short trip to Russia. 2026 features:

  • 30-day maximum stay (extended on 23 August 2025, up from 16 days)
  • 120-day validity after issuance, up from 60 days before the same reform
  • Single entry only — any exit from the territory voids the visa
  • 100% online application on the official portal evisa.kdmid.ru
  • 52 USD (around 48 EUR at 2026 exchange rate), payable by credit card
  • 4-calendar-day processing time (weekends included)
  • No invitation required, no insurance imposed by the procedure
  • All international border points open (airports, land borders, seaports)

See our complete e-visa Russia guide for the step-by-step procedure.

Business Visa (B)

The B visa is intended for professional missions: client meetings, contract negotiations, trade shows, training, audits. The invitation is issued by the Russian partner company, either in telegraphic form (fast procedure via the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs — the MID) or in classic form (original letter sent by mail). Standard validity: 30 or 90 days. Multi-entry variants available up to 1 year renewable.

Private Visa (P)

The P visa covers family visits and stays with a Russian individual. The invitation must be registered by the inviter with the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) — formerly the FMS — at their place of residence in Russia. Maximum validity: 90 days. Time to obtain the invitation on the Russian side: 30 to 60 days. This is the most natural route for spouses, parents or close friends of a Russian citizen.

Student Visa (U)

The student visa is issued to students admitted to an accredited Russian university or language programme. The university issues an official invitation after acceptance of the application file. Initial validity: 90 days, renewed annually on the spot for the total duration of studies. See our Russian student visa guide.

Work Visa (W)

The work visa requires an official invitation from the Russian employer, who must first obtain a foreign worker hiring permit from the Ministry of Internal Affairs (4 to 8-week procedure on the employer side). Initial validity 1 year, renewable. The HQS (Highly Qualified Specialist) status, accessible to profiles whose annual salary exceeds 2 million rubles (approximately 20,000 EUR in 2026), significantly accelerates the procedure.

Transit Visa (TR)

The transit visa is issued to travellers passing through Russia to reach a third country. Maximum validity: 10 days, reserved for airport or land transit. In practice, this visa is rare in 2026 due to alternative air routes (Istanbul, Belgrade) that avoid Russian airspace.

Humanitarian Visa (H)

The humanitarian visa is issued for scientific, religious, sporting, cultural or charitable activities supervised by an accredited Russian body. It also serves as a legal framework for journalists and researchers on short-term missions. Validity: 1 year, multiple entries.

. For a simple tourist trip in 2026, the unified e-visa replaces the standard tourist visa in 90% of cases since the extension to 30 days. The classic T visa is now justified only for double-entry itineraries (side trips to Finland, Georgia, Mongolia with return to Russia) or for nationals of countries excluded from the e-visa programme.

Russia Visa Application: Step-by-Step Procedure

For a standard tourist visa at the consulate, the procedure follows eight successive steps. For the e-visa, see our dedicated guide — the mechanics are reduced to four online steps.

Step 1 — Obtain the Invitation (Tourist Voucher)

This is the first piece to obtain, as the other documents depend on it. Three options:

  • Specialised online platforms (iVisa, Russia Support, VisaHQ, Travelrussia): 15-30 EUR, 24-72-hour delivery, PDF voucher
  • Hotel in Russia: if you have booked directly, the hotel can issue an invitation. 5-10-day delay, free or very low cost
  • Tour operator: included in the package if you go through a specialised travel agency

The voucher mentions the dates of stay, the cities visited and the host establishment. You are not required to follow the listed programme exactly — it is an administrative formality.

Step 2 — Complete the Electronic Form on visa.kdmid.ru

The official form is hosted on visa.kdmid.ru, the portal of the Consular Department of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Available in French, English and Russian. You enter:

  • Full civil status (surname, first names, date and place of birth, nationality)
  • Address in your home country
  • Profession and employer details
  • Planned itinerary in Russia (cities, accommodation, dates)
  • Previous trips to Russia and other countries over the past 10 years
  • Tourist voucher references (number of the inviting body)

Once completed, the form must be printed, dated and signed by hand. The photo is to be glued to the designated location.

Step 3 — Prepare a Compliant ID Photo

Format 3.5 × 4.5 cm, white and uniform background, face-on view, neutral expression, mouth closed, recent photo less than six months old. Requirements are strict: sunglasses, caps, hair over the eyes or coloured background trigger refusal.

Step 4 — Verify Passport Validity

Three cumulative conditions:

  • Validity at minimum 6 months after the end date of the requested visa
  • At least 2 consecutive blank pages reserved for visas
  • Ordinary passport only (emergency passports are refused)

If the passport is expiring in the coming months, renew it before any other procedure. UK renewal time: 3-6 weeks. US renewal time: 6-13 weeks.

Step 5 — Subscribe to Travel Health Insurance

Mandatory since 2014, the insurance certificate must meet four criteria:

  • Minimum coverage of 30,000 EUR (medical expenses, hospitalisation, repatriation)
  • Validity over the entire territory of the Russian Federation
  • Coverage for the entire stay, from the first to the last day inclusive
  • Explicit mention of Russia as the geographical zone covered

Several insurers offer compliant formulas: Chapka Assurances, ACS, Mondial Assistance, Allianz Travel, AXA Assistance, Europ Assistance, plus Anglophone-friendly options like SafetyWing or World Nomads (verify Russia coverage explicitly). Budget 20-40 EUR for two weeks, 30-80 EUR depending on total stay duration. See our travel insurance Russia guide for detailed comparisons.

Step 6 — Book an Appointment at the VFS Global Centre

VFS Global is the main accredited provider for collecting Russian visa files in Western Europe. Active centres in 2026:

CityCountryBookingHours
LondonUnited Kingdomvfsglobal.comMon-Fri, by appointment
EdinburghUnited Kingdomvfsglobal.comMon-Fri, by appointment

BrusselsBelgiumvfsglobal.comMon-Fri, by appointment
GenevaSwitzerlandvfsglobal.comMon-Fri, by appointment
Rome, MilanItalyvfsglobal.comMon-Fri, by appointment
Berlin, FrankfurtGermanyvfsglobal.comMon-Fri, by appointment

Booking is mandatory online on vfsglobal.com. In high season (May to September), slots may be 4-6 weeks out. VFS service fee: approximately 28-40 EUR per file.

For the United States, Russian consulates currently maintain limited operations in Washington DC, New York, Houston and Seattle, but appointment availability is severely constrained since 2022 — many US applicants now travel to a third country (Mexico, Turkey, Serbia) to apply.

Alternative: the consular section of the Russian Embassy in Paris (40 boulevard Lannes, 75116 Paris) accepts direct deposit, but slots are limited. Advantage: no VFS service fees.

Step 7 — Submit the File Physically (with Biometrics)

Since December 2014, submission requires physical presence for biometric collection: 10 digitised fingerprints and a facial photo. On the day of the appointment, present yourself with:

  • The signed and printed form, photo glued
  • The valid passport (original)
  • The tourist voucher (original or printed depending on the centre)
  • The insurance certificate (original printed)
  • An additional ID photo (security)
  • Proof of financial means if requested (bank statement, employment certificate)
  • Payment of consular and service fees

An agent verifies the file's compliance and issues a receipt with a tracking number.

Step 8 — Collect the Visa

Standard processing time: 4 to 10 working days after complete submission. Notification by email or SMS when the visa is ready. Collection in person at the centre, or by secure mail for an additional 20-30 EUR. The visa is affixed to a passport page in the form of a secure sticker mentioning validity dates and the number of authorised entries.

. Sequencing matters. Voucher first (24-72h), insurance next (5 minutes once dates are known), form and VFS appointment in parallel. Mandatory biometrics adds a logistical constraint: physical travel to a VFS centre in your country is required. The cumulative minimum delay between voucher trigger and visa collection is 2 to 3 weeks in standard procedure.

Russia E-Visa in 2026: the Online Procedure

For eligible nationals, the unified e-visa bypasses almost the entire classic pathway. Complete online procedure on evisa.kdmid.ru:

  1. Account creation on the official portal
  2. Form completion: civil status, passport, dates, address of stay, digital photo 300×400 pixels minimum (white background, JPEG)
  3. Payment by credit card (Visa or Mastercard) — 52 USD debited immediately, non-refundable
  4. Decision wait: 4 calendar days maximum, notification by email
  5. Print the e-visa PDF to keep with the passport during the trip

No voucher, no insurance certificate, no appointment, no biometrics in the home country (biometrics are taken on arrival at the border since late 2024 — see dedicated section).

Countries eligible for the unified e-visa in 2026: France, Belgium, Switzerland, other EU countries, the United Kingdom, Japan, China, India, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and more than 50 nationalities in total. The complete list is available on evisa.kdmid.ru and may evolve depending on the diplomatic context. Note: US, Canadian and Australian citizens are NOT currently on the e-visa list and must apply for a standard tourist visa. See our e-visa extended to 64 countries guide for the history of extensions.

Realistic Total Cost of a Russia Visa Application in 2026

Beyond consular fees, the total cost of a visa application includes several budget lines often forgotten in online comparisons. Real breakdown for a UK or EU resident:

ItemStandard tourist visaUnified e-visa
Consular fees (standard)35 EUR (EU citizens)52 USD (~48 EUR)
VFS Global service fees28-40 EUR0 EUR
Voucher / invitation15-30 EUR0 EUR
Travel health insurance (2 weeks)20-40 EUR20-40 EUR (recommended even if not required)
ID photo5-10 EUR0 EUR (digital)
Secure mail fees (option)20-30 EUR0 EUR
Travel to VFS centreVariable0 EUR
Standard total120-180 EUR70-90 EUR
Express procedure (urgency × 2)200-330 EURNot applicable

For non-Schengen nationals (United States, post-Brexit United Kingdom, Canada, Australia), the consular fee is significantly higher: 160 USD for Americans under reciprocity rules, approximately 110 GBP for British citizens. The e-visa remains at 52 USD for all eligible nationalities, which makes it a significant saving for these countries — when eligible.

. The e-visa costs about half as much as a standard tourist visa for an EU citizen (70-90 EUR vs 120-180 EUR) and saves two to three weeks on the total delay. For a single-entry trip of less than 30 days, it is the default option unless your nationality is not eligible.

Documents Required: the Detailed List

For a Standard Tourist Visa

  1. Passport valid 6 months after end of visa, 2 blank pages, ordinary (not emergency)
  2. Printed and signed form, photo glued, completed on visa.kdmid.ru
  3. Tourist voucher (original or printed depending on the centre)
  4. Travel health insurance certificate ≥ 30,000 EUR, explicit Russia mention
  5. ID photo 3.5 × 4.5 cm white background, recent
  6. Proof of financial means (on request): recent bank statement, employer certificate, tax return
  7. Proof of accommodation if different from the voucher (hotel reservation, private invitation certificate)

For an E-Visa

  1. Passport valid 6 months after entry into Russia
  2. Digital photo JPEG, 300 × 400 pixels minimum, white background, file size 10 KB to 5 MB
  3. Valid email address to receive the e-visa PDF

  5. Online form completed on evisa.kdmid.ru

Proof of financial means and the insurance certificate are not required for the e-visa, although insurance remains strongly recommended for medical reasons.

Common Mistakes That Lead to Refusal

Russian consular authorities apply criteria strictly. Six errors recur in the majority of refusals.

1 — Non-Compliant Photo

This is the leading cause of rejection. Non-white background, visible smile, open mouth, sunglasses, non-religious headwear, hair over the eyes, photo too old or insufficient quality: all grounds for immediate refusal. Use an accredited photographer who knows the ISO/IEC 19794-5 standards applied to official documents.

2 — Insufficient Passport Validity

The 6 months after end of visa rule is applied without exception. If your visa runs until 15 August 2026, your passport must be valid until at least 15 February 2027. The 2 consecutive blank pages rule is also verified: observation and amendment pages do not count.

3 — Expired or Erroneous Invitation

The tourist voucher must mention the exact stay dates, the registration number of the inviting body with the Russian Ministry of Tourism, and the cities visited. Any inconsistency between the voucher, the form and the insurance triggers rejection. Verify the three documents the morning of submission.

4 — Non-Compliant Insurance

The insurance must explicitly mention Russia as the covered geographical zone, and the minimum 30,000 EUR coverage must include medical repatriation. A simple "Europe" or "Worldwide without specification" policy is rejected. Request a printed certificate with the word "Russia" in clear, and verify that the coverage dates extend from the first to the last day of the stay.

5 — Poorly Completed Electronic Form

The most frequent errors: entry date inconsistent with the voucher, incomplete birthplace, omission of a previous trip, mistranslated profession. The form must be printed, signed by hand, and the photo glued to the designated location. An unsigned form is rejected without examination.

6 — Validity Period Exceeded

The entry date mentioned in the application must correspond to the actual entry date. An application for entry on 1 June 2026 does not allow entry on 25 May. For the e-visa, the 120-day validity window after issuance requires planning entry within this period — past the deadline, you must restart the procedure and pay again.

Special Cases to Anticipate

Travel with a Minor

Every child must have their own individual visa, even if listed on a parent's passport. Minors travelling with a single parent or with a third party must present a parental authorisation signed by the absent parent (or both), translated into Russian and apostilled. For minors travelling alone, authorisation from both parents is mandatory. This rule is strictly applied on arrival in Russia: without authorisation, the child can be turned back.

Pregnant Women

Pregnancy is not grounds for refusal. However, foreign ministries and airlines recommend not travelling beyond the 7th month. Check the restrictions of your airline (Turkish Airlines, Air Serbia, Qatar Airways) and ensure the insurance explicitly covers pregnancy and premature delivery.

Itinerary Including Crimea

Most Western foreign ministries strongly advise against travel to Crimea and the annexed Ukrainian territories (Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia). Entry through these zones is considered illegal by the Ukrainian authorities and exposes one to criminal prosecution if you later return to Ukraine. Coverage from Western travel health insurance is generally excluded in these areas.

Direct Europe-Russia Flights Suspended

Direct flights between the European Union and Russia have been suspended since 27 February 2022. Alternative routes pass through:

  • Istanbul (Turkish Airlines, AZAL) — 8 to 10 hours total with stopover, 600-1,100 EUR depending on lead time
  • Belgrade (Air Serbia) — 7 to 9 hours
  • Yerevan (Aeroflot, Armenian Airlines) — 9 to 11 hours
  • Doha (Qatar Airways) — 11 to 13 hours
  • Dubai (Emirates, Flydubai) — 11 to 14 hours

No reopening of direct flights is announced in the short term. See our flights to Russia guide for detailed comparisons.

Mandatory Biometrics at the Border Since Late 2024

Since 1 December 2024, all foreigners entering Russia must provide their biometric data (10 fingerprints + facial photo) at the border crossing point or at a designated centre within 90 days of entry. This biometrics is in addition to that taken at consulate file submission. For e-visas, biometrics are collected on arrival. See our mandatory border biometrics guide.

Foreign Ministry Recommendations 2026

Most Western foreign ministries (UK FCDO, US State Department, Canadian Global Affairs, Australian DFAT, French Quai d'Orsay) classify Russia as a "do not travel" or "advise against all but essential travel" zone since 2022. Main recommendations:

  • Do not travel except for compelling reasons (family, critical professional)
  • Anticipate any evacuation: most Western countries no longer operate direct flights from Moscow
  • Maintain an active bank account in a third country (transfers from Western Europe are constrained)
  • Check daily updates on your foreign ministry's website during the stay

This official recommendation does not block visa issuance by Russian authorities, but it has an impact on travel insurance: some policies now exclude Russia from their standard coverage. Verify your contract conditions before subscribing.

In Summary: 8 Points for a Smooth Russia Visa Application in 2026

.

  1. Choose the right category: e-visa for 90% of short trips (eligible nationalities), standard tourist visa for double entries and non-listed nationalities (US, Canada, Australia).
  2. Anticipate 4 to 6 weeks in standard procedure, more in summer high season.
  3. Voucher first: 15-30 EUR on iVisa or Russia Support, 24-72-hour delivery.
  4. visa.kdmid.ru form complete, printed, signed by hand, photo glued.
  5. Health insurance ≥ 30,000 EUR with explicit Russia mention, 20-40 EUR for 2 weeks.
  6. VFS Global centre: London, Paris, Brussels, Geneva, Berlin, Rome and others. Online appointment, on-site biometrics, 4-10 working days processing.
  7. Total cost 120-180 EUR for standard visa, 70-90 EUR for e-visa for an EU citizen.
  8. Check your foreign ministry's advisory and insurance conditions before departure. Fees and processing times are indicative: confirm on kdmid.ru and vfsglobal.com before each application.

Applying for a Russian visa in 2026 remains a structured but accessible process for those who plan ahead. The main recent revolution is the extension of the e-visa to 30 days in August 2025, which makes the consular procedure largely obsolete for simple tourist trips. For long-term expatriations, see our complete living in Russia guide which covers the transition from work visa to RVP and then VNJ. For specific visas, see our dedicated guides on the student visa and the invitation letter.
